Cosmic Mechanics is a celestial reflection on the eternal recurrence of time and cyclical nature of life. Conceived as a five-hour long performance event beginning at dusk on the load of the iconic South Melbourne Town Hall building, Cosmic Mechanics is a curated, multimedia work that presents the four books of George Crumb’s visionary and ground-breaking Makrokosmos in a unique and imaginative way. Directed by internationally-acclaimed virtuoso pianist Sonya Lifschitz and supported by the Australian National Academy of Music, this site-specific event brings together music, lighting design, improvisation, and experience design to amplify the mystical, otherworldly quality of Crumb’s music, and to illuminate the South Melbourne Town Hall, and its unique position in Melbourne’s cultural landscape, into vivid pulsing life.
